What to expect from this workshop?
A literary workshop in 7 sessions to compare “1984“ by George Orwell to “Julia” by Sandra Newman. Through a feminist reading, we’ll explore Julia’s (Oceania’s quiet rebel) forgotten voice, and we’ll rediscover the power of the female narration.
We’ll cover:
- The original text’s implicit sexism
- Julia’s new role as the protagonist
- Themes of power, intimacy, resistance
- Connections with current political and social themes: control, surveillance, identity, body, dissent
This workshop is for you if...
- …you’ve always wondered what Julia really thought
- …you want to read or re-read “1984” with a different perspective and a new awareness
- …you care about the link between literature and power
- …you’re looking for a safe space to discuss themes such as gender, control and freedom
- …you’re a teacher, a student, a reader, or just a curious soul
